Going down …

My server went down to its knees late last week. Googlebot went into high gear and went rampage on 2 of my AWS (Amazon.com Web Services). The Googlebot started indexing and at the end of each day one (1) GB of bandwidth per site was used. The same thing the next day. 1 GB bandwidth on a site usually indicates high traffic with lots of visitors but my log files showed no significant increase in unique visitor numbers. But the bandwidth used by Googlebot kept on going up. In 5 days Googlebot now has used 6 GB bandwidth on each of the two websites.

My server load went high up and things slowed down dramatically. I had do to something about it or completely risk the server going down. I did bite the bullet and ordered a reseller account at Httpme.com. Within 10 hours the account was operable and I started moving these 2 high volume sites of my server. The impact was significant and the server came back to normal load. However now I got to deal with additional $35.00 in cost per month. I have to think about this and see if there will be income from these 2 Amazon.com AWS storefronts. One website is scheduled to be sold anyway but now I am going to wait to see how the next Google index update looks for this site. A website with thousands of ecommerce related pages indexed just sells better.

Did I mention my system admin missing? 2 days after my initial posting on this blog he came back to the surface. Strange. It’s almost like calling someone and leaving a voicemail because nobody answers the phone. While leaving the voice a call from the same person is coming in on the second line. Ever had that happen to you? It just happened to me. ;)
